Reader Andy emails me several photos of Dennis Anderson and his new bride Carisa at their wedding in Las Vegas earlier this year. For those who do not know who Dennis Anderson is, he is the driver of monster truck, the "Grave Digger".

The new Mrs. Anderson seems to have an upside down on her right arm.

= loyalty, devotion, fidelity

  1. Having absolutely no idea about the culture, I have to ask: does inverting the symbol have a similar effect as some other glyph texts and invert the meaning?

  2. Anon: No, inverting the text generally has no specific meaning, with a few special exceptions, such as , , or (spring, double happiness, and fortune, respectively).

In such cases, it is done due to the homonymous nature of the words and in Mandarin (and a few other dialects). If you invert spring (春倒), it indicates that spring is here (春到). Likewise, an inverted double happiness sign indicates that someone in the househould has "just married."

(To be honest, I don't actually recall seeing a case of someone using an inverted 福, but it does seem like something that could be used.)

  3. Sure, inverted 福 appear on New Year's signs, as in 福到, (blessings are here/arrive), with 到 punning on 倒 (upside down/invert).

  4. As some anti-Christians would turn the cross upside down as protest, perhaps Mrs. Anderson had the character done upside down to show her "anti-devotion".

It would be even more hilarious if she divoces him after a brief marriage and take half of all his possessions.

  5. Do people really turn crosses upside-down as a form of protest? The apostle Peter (or St. Peter for Catholics) was crucified upside down on a cross, so I rather doubt an upside down cross would upset too many Christians/Catholics.

I have, however, seen the reverse of the "Jesus fish" emblems people put on their cars, which has a fish with legs facing the opposite direction of the "Jesus fish," with the word "Darwin" inside...

  6. Glen, While Peter chose to be crucified upside-down (so that he wouldn't die in the same was as Jesus), the inverted cross has come to mean something altogether different. In some places, it is an indication of satanism.

  7. Could it be she had this one done upside down so it would be correct from her viewpoint: let's say "as a reminder"?

  8. yes everybody it is upside down!!! it started out as a mistake the tattoo artist made.. but ive always thought of it as a good thing because when i look down at my arm it is right side up to me... i love it and thats all that matters to me...
